Six projects active today. The day had a strong infrastructure-and-instrumentation flavor — three of the six projects were focused on cleaning up measurement systems, stripping away dead machinery, or making invisible work visible. The other three shipped real features: a podcast expansion strategy, an AI quality-gate system, and a substantial analytics sprint.
Paulos — Infrastructure purge and workflow simplification
The orchestration layer got its biggest cleanup in weeks. Twenty-four launchd plist files — the cron-style schedulers that had been driving orchestrate runs, health checks, social posting, and the EOD pipeline — were deleted along with the paulos launchd CLI command group and the install script. These had been effectively replaced by tmux-based sessions and /loop, making the launchd layer dead weight. The health check module stubs check_launchd() as an empty list for backwards compatibility, and the rollover pipeline skips pause/play with a log message.
The dev-loop workflow changed fundamentally: it now commits directly to main and pushes, eliminating feature branches and PRs entirely. This is a deliberate tradeoff — one developer in active development, where self-approving PRs was pure friction. Tests become the only safety net. The skill also gained a needs-decompose handler (queue step 3) for breaking large issues into 2-5 independently shippable sub-issues.
The reflect/podcast skill was tightened after reviewing the last post (“silence-by-design”), which was “barely non-technical” despite the intent. Two new directives were added: every insight must lead with the bold claim (no buildup, no throat-clearing), and the framing must be entirely non-technical — no software concepts, no engineering metaphors, not even as analogies. The listener should have no indication the author works in technology.
A quiet but important fix: call_llm() now auto-loads .env via python-dotenv before API calls. The ANTHROPIC_API_KEY was in paulos/.env but never got loaded when humanize() was called as a Python function from a Claude Code session (no shell environment to inherit from). This was the source of “no API key” warnings in the reflect pipeline.

Authexis — Analytics instrumentation sprint
A systematic PostHog cleanup session that closed 18 issues in one sitting. The work fell into three categories: fixing what was broken, removing what was phantom, and adding what was missing.
The most significant fix was discovering that onboarding_status was never programmatically set to 'completed' for new users (#1830). The onboarding wizard page had been removed months ago, but the bootstrap handler never flipped the status. This was a real bug affecting user lifecycle tracking, not just a telemetry gap.
The re-engagement drip system (#1816) got full telemetry wiring: reengagement.email_sent fires server-side after each successful send, and CTA clicks now route through a new tracking redirect endpoint (/api/v2/track/reengagement/click) that captures reengagement.cta_clicked before redirecting. Auth flows (#1810) got signup/login/reset tracking events.
Several issues were identified as phantom — events documented in TELEMETRY.md that referenced features that don’t exist in the current app. Article bookmarks (#1825) are a legacy Rails feature never ported. Feed management (#1824) has no web UI. The PostHog identify timing concern (#1815) was a non-issue since cookies persist through OAuth redirects on the same domain. TELEMETRY.md was cleaned up to reflect reality.
18 issues closed (#1810–#1814, #1815–#1822, #1824–#1828, #1830). v1.5 milestone: 49/50 (only the parent analytics issue #1805 remains, likely closable now).
Eclectis — Observability verification and PostHog separation
Started with an idle dev-loop tick, then shifted to verifying the observability stack. The key finding: Eclectis events were flowing into the Authexis PostHog project (308520), not Eclectis’s own project (360405). The Eclectis project existed in PostHog but was completely empty — a leftover from forking the codebase where the env var was copied but never updated.
Fixed by updating NEXT_PUBLIC_POSTHOG_KEY across .env.local and all three Vercel environments (production, preview, development). No code changes needed — the instrumentation (provider, identify, server capture, reverse proxy) was already correct.
Sentry verification revealed 9 unresolved issues. Two new errors (ECLECTIS-A and ECLECTIS-8) appeared during the session — both “Cannot coerce the result to a single JSON object” from Supabase, likely .single() calls returning multiple rows from getFeedbackLoopHealth and getSettings.
1 issue closed (#591). 7 open issues all in backlog.
Phantasmagoria — Pipeline architecture and AI quality gates
Three major pieces landed in the Stellaris event generation pipeline.
Stage decoupling. Previously, generate_release.py --stage 2 would regenerate Stage 1 narratives before generating outcomes, meaning you couldn’t iterate on Stage 2 without risking Stage 1 drift. Stage 1 outputs are now saved as snapshots in stage1/, and Stage 2 reads from those frozen narratives. The pipeline is deterministic — Stage 1 locks once approved, Stage 2 can be re-run freely.
Stage 3/4 split. The old check_c3_to_ship() combined rendering and linting. Now they’re separate stages with their own contract gates (check_c3_to_c4() and check_c4_to_ship()). The linter was renamed to “validator” (stellaris_mod_validator.py). Renderer bugs were fixed — modifier directory output and on_action trigger syntax were broken.
AI-based choice tension evaluation (Stage 2B+). The headline feature: after Stage 2A generates event outcomes, a new Stage 2B+ pass scores each event’s option set for tension on a 1-5 scale. Events scoring below 3 get rejected with specific critique, and Stage 2A regenerates with that feedback — up to 5 retries. The evaluator checks for dominant options (one choice clearly better), reward stacking, tech parity violations, and punished caution. Both test events passed after 2-3 retries, showing the feedback loop catches and fixes real problems.
Design rules baked into prompts: max 2 effects per option, one premium reward per option (tech OR follow-up OR strong modifier — pick one), follow-up events reframed as gambles rather than free bonuses. All milestones complete (v1.5: 18/18, v2: 5/5).
Polymathic-h — Podcast expansion for search discovery
Apple Podcasts ranking data showed the show at #7 for “ai project building” but invisible for philosophical and human-experience terms — the exact territory where most essays live. Three layers of fixes shipped.
Feed metadata. Show-level description rewritten to include missing search terms (“human side of technology,” “artificial intelligence philosophy”), and itunes:keywords tag added.
Back-catalog voicing. 8 essays spanning February and March were voiced via OpenAI TTS and uploaded to Cloudinary — roughly 77 minutes of new content covering topics from workforce economics to the philosophy of busyness.
Transcript indexing. <podcast:transcript> tags added to every episode, linking to the blog post URL. Since all audio is TTS from essay text, the post IS the transcript — giving Apple and Spotify full-text indexing for every episode.
Architectural change. The pre-commit hook was rewritten to voice ALL published posts automatically, not just those tagged “podcast.” Any non-draft post without audio_url gets audio generated on commit. No tags to remember, no manual steps. The hook was also fixed to use OpenAI TTS instead of the dropped ElevenLabs provider. CODEBASE.md was regenerated from 488KB down to a compact 79-line annotated tree.
Textorium TUI — Idle check-in
Quick dev-loop run. All issues triaged and sitting in backlog. The project is stable at v1.0.2 with ~3,300 lines of Rust. Four backlog items parked (#110 content wrapping, #56 frontmatter macros, #8 email signature, #1 homebrew-core submission). Three old work logs from February need committing.

Observability as a first-class concern
Three of six projects today were focused on making their measurement systems accurate. Authexis cleaned up 18 issues of PostHog instrumentation — fixing real bugs like onboarding_status never being set, removing phantom events for features that don’t exist, and wiring new telemetry for re-engagement flows. Eclectis discovered its events were flowing to the wrong PostHog project entirely. Polymathic-h added transcript indexing and metadata so search engines can actually find the content. The common pattern: all three had instrumentation that looked right on paper but was wrong in practice. Verifying it required going beyond the code and checking what was actually happening in production.
Stripping dead layers
Paulos deleted 24 launchd plists and an entire CLI command group. Authexis removed phantom events from TELEMETRY.md. Polymathic-h replaced a 488KB CODEBASE.md with a 79-line tree. Each project removed something that existed because it was built once and never revisited — not because it was still needed.
AI as evaluator, not just generator
Phantasmagoria’s Stage 2B+ tension evaluator is a notable pattern: using the same AI model that generates content to evaluate that content against specific criteria, with a rejection-and-retry loop. This is a production-grade quality gate — not just “generate and hope.” The design acknowledges the risk of shared blind spots (same model generating and evaluating) but mitigates it with specific, measurable criteria (tension score 1-5, dominant option detection).
Direct-to-main as a workflow signal
Paulos moving to direct-to-main commits (no branches, no PRs) is worth noting as a workflow pattern. It works here because: one developer, active development phase, comprehensive test suite as safety net. The overhead of branch-PR-approve-merge was pure ceremony when you’re approving your own PRs. This won’t scale to multi-contributor, but it’s right for where the project is now.
